Ashtanga Yoga in Naples, FL

Traditional. Grounded. Deeply rewarding.

Ashtanga is one of the oldest and most respected forms of yoga in the world. Unlike styles that change from class to class, Ashtanga follows a fixed sequence of postures — the same series, practiced in the same order, every time. That consistency is the point. Over time, the sequence becomes familiar enough that your mind can settle, your breath can lead, and the real work can begin.

It's a practice built on repetition, patience, and presence.

What to Expect in Class

Each class moves through a set series of standing and seated postures, connected by breath and a rhythmic pattern of movement called a vinyasa. You'll build heat as you go — not from intensity for its own sake, but from the steady accumulation of breath and focus.

At Naples Yoga & Movement, we teach in a traditional Mysore-influenced style, which means that even within a group setting, each student works at their own pace. Your instructor moves through the room, offering individual adjustments and guidance rather than calling out a one-size-fits-all cue to the whole class.

Some of the postures and movements you can expect include:

  • Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar A & B) to open the practice
  • Standing sequences that build balance, strength, and focus
  • Seated forward folds and twists that develop flexibility and calm
  • Backbends and inversions as the practice deepens over time
  • A closing sequence focused on restoration and integration

No two students are at the same place in the series, and that's completely fine. You'll start where you are and build from there.

Who Is Ashtanga For?

Ashtanga is a wonderful fit if you:

  • Enjoy structure and appreciate knowing what's coming next
  • Are looking for a practice you can deepen over months and years, not just weeks
  • Want a physically engaging class that also quiets the mind
  • Are curious about yoga in its more traditional, classical form
  • Have some prior experience with yoga and feel ready to commit to a consistent practice

It's also genuinely accessible to beginners who come in with patience and a willingness to take it one step at a time. The structure actually makes it easier to learn — you're not adapting to a new sequence every class.

Who Might Want to Look Elsewhere

Ashtanga may not be the right starting point if you:

  • Are recovering from a recent injury or have significant joint limitations — the fixed sequence doesn't adapt the way a more fluid class might
  • Prefer variety and spontaneity in your movement practice
  • Are looking for something purely gentle or restorative — Ashtanga has those elements, but it asks something of you physically too
  • Feel strongly resistant to structure or repetition

If that sounds like you, our Yin Yoga or Somatic Movement classes might be a better first step — and you're always welcome to come back to Ashtanga when the time feels right.

A Note on Our Approach

What makes Ashtanga at Naples Yoga & Movement different is simply the space we hold for it. Our groups are small, which means your instructor actually knows where you are in the sequence, what you're working on, and what you need that day. That level of attention is rare — and in a practice as nuanced as Ashtanga, it makes a real difference.
